Entender = to understand


Entender = to understand (in-tehn-dare)

As in:

  • Entiendo = I understand  
  • No entiendo = I don’t understand 
  • Te entiendo = I understand you  
  • Te entiendo perfectamente = I understand you completely 

Entender and comprender both mean to understand. You'd use entender when you're talking about understanding words, phrases, or daily communication. Comprender is used for big concepts like understanding war, philosophy, or religion. Similar to the difference between comprehend and understand in English.

Present tense conjugation for entender:

Yo: entiendo (I understand)

Tú: entiendes (You understand)

Él/Ella/Usted: entiende (He/She/You [formal] understands)

Nosotros: entendemos (We understand)

Vosotros: entendéis (Ya’ll understand)

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes: entienden (They/Ya’ll[formal] understand)
